What Is a Driver Intervention Program (DIP)?

The Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education (AWARE) Driver Intervention Program (DIP) is a 72-hour session for first-time offenses of driving under the influence (DUI) and/or operating a motor vehicle impaired (OVI). This program serves as an alternative to an otherwise mandatory minimum 3-day jail sentence and may be prescribed at the court’s discretion.

In contrast to spending three days in jail, the AWARE program is held in a comfortable public setting and includes small group discussions. Over the three-day process of education and screening, participants can also receive a complete alcohol and other drug assessment and a referral for treatment. If a judge chooses to sentence a defendant to a jail term of more than three days, time served can be a combination of the DIP paired with actual jail days.

What is involved in the driver intervention program?

Ohio’s AWARE driver intervention program curriculum includes education on:

  • Consequences (physical, psychological, and social) of alcohol and drug use
  • Harmful effects (physiological and psychological) of alcohol and drugs on driving ability and performance
  • Blood alcohol content (BAC) and the definition of legal impairment
  • Alcohol and drug abuse symptoms and the progression of dependence
  • License suspension/revocation, fines, and incarceration
  • Addiction treatment and self-help resources

Driver intervention programs in Ohio are typically held at hotels so that participants can stay on location for the duration of the program. DIP participants will receive accurate, detailed education on the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. They will also be educated regarding the potential for addiction.

What are the benefits of participating in the driver intervention program?

The combined information individuals receive can aid them in making necessary, healthy changes in their lifestyle. Participants typically find the AWARE driver intervention program to be more educational, beneficial, and interesting than anticipated. Regardless, this program is a beneficial replacement for jail time while also helping to change perspectives and hopefully shift future outcomes. Once the program is completed, facilitators will prepare a DIP completion report that can be sent to the court or the participant’s attorney.
